Patient Evaluation and Treatment
All patients undergo a thorough medical and diagnostic evaluation to identify the origin and extent of vein disease. Dr. Lewis can then recommend treatment options, ranging from conservative therapy to varicose vein ablation, including endovenous laser ablation, sclerotherapy, ambulatory phlebectomy and intense pulsed light treatment. The most suitable treatment regimen for each patient is determined by the extent of signs and symptoms, overall health and individual risks and benefits.
Initial Consultation
The first phase of treatment is a history and physical examination. Patients meet with Dr. Lewis to discuss their concerns and evaluate clinical signs and symptoms. He examines each patient and carefully reviews the vascular and medical history. Peninsula Vascular Center, located in San Mateo County, California and neighboring Palo Alto and Menlo Park, specializes in vein ablation with laser vein treatments.
Ultrasound Evaluation & Diagnosis
Ultrasound scanning is an integral step in the detection and diagnosis of venous disease. When the initial clinical examination warrants, we recommend ultrasound evaluation to precisely identify the underlying abnormal venous disease. This allows mapping of the venous anatomy and function so that we can recommend an optimal and precise treatment plan. Even if you appear to only have spider veins, you may still need an ultrasound examination to identify underlying venous abnormalities.
Treatment
Dr. Lewis performs all vascular treatments on an outpatient basis, so our patients enjoy the benefits of no hospitalization, no general anesthesia, no stitches and a quick recovery. Treatment times range from one to two hours, depending on the area treated and the number of combined procedures. We also provide detailed pre- and post-procedure instructions.
Follow-Up
We schedule all varicose vein patients for follow up visits with ultrasound examination two to three days after the procedure in order to monitor initial treatment outcomes. We continue to follow progress and may perform staged therapy at regular intervals, as determined by the treatment plan.
