Deep Vein Disease

The deep veins of the leg can also become insufficient, importantly contributing to leg symptoms and varicose vein development. In addition, large blood clots can form in the deep veins, so called deep vein thrombosis (DVT). This is a serious medical problem that can have life threatening consequences when these blood clots detach and travel (embolize) through the right side of the heart to the lungs (a "pulmonary embolus") and obstruct blood flow. This disease has recently been brought to public attention as part of the "economy class syndrome", where a constellation of adverse factors, including prolonged sitting in the cramped seating during lengthy airplane flights, leads to its development.
