About Veins

Peninsula Vascular Center is a private practice center specializing exclusively in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with vascular disease. We serve the mid-Peninsula, including Menlo Park, Palo Alto, Atherton, Santa Clara and San Mateo County, California.

Varicose veins of the superficial venous system and deep vein thrombosis (DVT) of the deep venous system are the best known manifestations of leg vein disease. The causes and the clinical consequences of these diseases differ, even though they may coexist.

There are two parallel systems of veins in the legs. Deep veins lie in the mid portions of the legs. The superficial venous system of the legs is closer to the skin and there are numerous perforating veins that connect the deep and superficial venous systems. The deep system normally returns 80% of the blood from the legs to the heart and the superficial saphenous venous system the remaining 20%.
